I have already refinished my 40 year old “plank look” cabinets twice. I applied at least 6 thin coats, and the table still scratches easily. Mix 3 parts glaze to 1 part paint then working in small sections brush it on then quickly wipe it off with a cloth leaving more in the deep areas and around the edges. It looked as if I had used a semi-gloss. I didn’t try the topcoat to see if it made a difference though. The reason it makes this style paint look darker is because it is chalky in nature and when a seal or wax coat is applied it takes away that “chalky” effect and it appears darker. This is what I am about to do. My kitchen’s gonna have some bling when I’m finally done! Secondly, a laminate is more durable than wood in relation to dents and dings. A top coat such as a polycoat or paste wax is applied on a finished surface.
