If I had to choose but one tobacco this would be it. I've heard that its inclusion is why Balkan was labelled a ?smoking mixture? The cut of the tobacco out of the pouch was very rough, and had a good number of twigs, etc. Appearance and Tin aroma: medium broad-cut ribbons. It's deeply came to me with amazing satisfaction. In the years that followed Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture became a legend. The very grassy, citrusy, barely dark fruity and earthy Virginias have little of the complexity it once had, and theres more of here than before. . From 1962-63 through 1978 when I stopped smoking a pipe regularly, my tobacconist sent me two 8 ox tins of Balkan Sobranie each month and that included my tour in Vietnam in 1967-68. I've tried Balkan Sasieni, the current Balkan Sobranie, the current Best Blend from the current Smokers' Haven, and Balkan Sobranie throughout the '70s, '80s, 90's and '00s, as well as Margate (probably the currrent Best, as Germain now blends for Smokers' Haven, I've heard), Caravan, Penzance, McClelland's Yenidje Highlander and Yenidje Supreme (which lacks latakia), and countless other English/Balkan/Oriental blends from the late-lamented Dunhills to those corner tobacconist bulk-bought or hand blended attempts to clone Balkan. Some of the prices I've seen just are not warranted. Since TR has now carved out the new BS under Germain, (a good thing), here are my thoughts on the old Balkan Sobranie. It is considered as The Holy Grail of Pipe Tobacco! Aging will do wonders to this I'm sure. . Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of smoky, very bitter wood, floral, toasted bread, leather, musty herbal vegetation, incense, dry earth, acidic/spicy, citrus peel/zest, a mildly sweet stewed tangy fruit background note, and a very peppery retro. Im glad I got it and will continue to smoke it until its gone. During the pursuit of perfection, excellence was achieved. The Gallager version is, to my taste, rich and satisfying; smokes cool and is perfectly balanced between components. Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco I am still smoking it occasionally, out of tins remaining from the 70's through the 90's. Im not very fond of Latakia heavy blends and was pleasantly surprised that the Latakia doesnt overpower the Orientals or Virginias. Eventually I got myself a Churchwarden and took up the pipe. I see why this blend commands a premium. It is easy for me to say that Balkan Sobranie is/was my favorite tobacco of all time. The same topping as the 1981 and pouch version. It reminds me of two blends sort of: Pease's Charing Cross and Bohemian Scandal. Very nuanced, cool and even burning to the bottom of the bowl, but unless you just have to see for yourself or just have to have it for your collection, you probably shouldn't waste your time. Sure, maybe the initial experience won't be the same, but, overall, the smoking experience should be just as enjoyable and with a lot less waiting and frustration. The tin note is latakia forward with a strong sharp mustiness from the orientals, quite a different aroma from other balkan type blends I've had. Indeed, this is my old friend and it has mellowed with age but still has that "oomph" that only the Balkan Sobranie White has. It was a little dry so I had to add a little humidor to revive it. Westminster is a complex finely tuned mixture that will appeal to those who appreciated the splendid English blends that once were easily found, Red Odessa is a straightforward, profoundly old-fashioned English Blend that will bring back wonderful half-memories. My buddy brought this over to try. One of the best pipe tobaccos i have ever smoke. I had no experience with the blend previously but, had tried the others years ago. A fine cut mix of dark and light Virginia's, Macedonian tobacco and Cyprian latakia. I don't mind the premium prices this blend commands; it's worth it. The tobacco cut varies from rough to smooth and needs a bit of a rubbing out to help it burn evenly. Not so heavy, incredibly smooth tobacco, giving a gentle sweetness and a dry, salty smoking that reminds me of Syrian Latakia.It was smoked easily until the end of the bowl. It is incredibly smooth and creamy, with a mild sweetness and a dry, salty smokiness that reminds me more of Syrian Latakia than Cyprian (I don't know for sure which one is present). I then flavored it in with the Syrian Latakia until it reached the smokiness I desired (I had some Sobranie on hand for comparison purposes). This is a gentle mixture that I'd smoke any time of day were it not for its rarity. Had a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste and room note. However, for many, the newer blends are just as enjoyable, if different. However, I have never been able to get too far away from a good Balkan flake/mixture. At least for this one time, the cost of the tin was well worth it. I believe that now there are better blends of this kind. I'm anxious to try the new Grand Orientals series from McClelland to see how they compare to BS (specifically, Yenidje Supreme, Yenidje Highlander, and Yenice Agonya) and will update this review at that time. The nic-hit is just past the center of mild to medium. Recent pouches were also drier. Probably nearly forty percent Turkish leaf maximum. It was like a big glorious hit of midnote with some bottom. The taste throughout was awesome. It had been 15 years since I had seen this "Varietal". and before I spent the $95 I thought twice.. and then, of course, pulled the trigger. Taste of Virginia was somewhat subtle but in good manners, any stronger taste would, in my opinion, interfere with the Latakia and spoil that special feeling.
